About The Product

Published via the yank Geophysical Union as a part of the Field journey Guidebooks Series.

The Cascade variety is an lively north-trending volcanic arc on the western fringe of North the USA (Figure 1). on the northern finish of the variety, among 47°N and 49°N, the typical elevation raises, peaks develop into sharper, quite a few small glaciers live to tell the tale at the greater slopes, and volcanic rocks of the Cascade arc are scarce. This zone is the North Cascades variety. The North Cascades are bounded at the west via the fore-arc basin of the Puget Lowland, at the south by way of the arc volcanic rocks of the principal Cascades, and at the southeast through the back-arc flood basalts of the Columbia Plateau. The geologic id of the variety isn't really so essentially outlined to the north, however it is geographically bounded at the northeast by way of the Okanogan levels and at the northwest through the Fraser River, which separates the Cascades from the Coast Mountains.

The foliated margin of the pluton sharply overlies a moderately steep, NE-dipping thin envelope of the Twisp Valley Schist which in turn structurally overlies, in descending order, the Battle Mountain gneiss, Tuckaway Lake gneiss, and Lake Juanita leucogneiss units of Miller [1987] (Figure 10). These orthogneisses are metamorphosed intrusive bodies within the Skagit Gneiss, and are probably among the youngest orthogneisses in the Skagit. The deformed SW margin of the Oval Peak pluton, underlying Twisp Valley Schist, Battle Mountain and Tuckaway Lake units, and highly foliated part of the Lake Juanita unit together constitute the Gabriel Peak tectonic belt, a high strain zone which extends northwestward for -60 Ian (Section III; Figures 5, 6)).

Near here was a cable tramway to miningpropects on the shoulder of Mount Johannesburg. 0) Bridge across the North Fork of the Cascade River. 5) Stop 5-7 Outcrop of fine-grained amphibolite in the Napeequa unit. The schistose mafic amphibolite is coarse-grained but otherwise is typical of the oceanic facies of the Chelan Mountains terrane. The amphibolite here has two lineations: green hornblende prisms plunge steeply, but a crinkle lineation is subhorizontal. Metaclastic rocks of the Cascade River unit crop out to the southeast on Johannesburg Mtn.

Exposures of agmatite and schist of the Ruby Creek Heterogeneous Plutonic Belt of Misch [1966]. This stop is in the Ross Lake fault zone, the zone of faulting, ductile deformation, and westward increase in metamorphic grade that separates the Skagit Gneiss from lower-grade rocks to the east (Section III). On days 2 and 3 we saw this zone SE of the 50 Ma Golden Hom granite, which is exposed a few kilometers SE of here. From here to the west side of Ross Lake, the fault zone has been invaded by numerous granitoid intrusions, some foliated, some not, ranging in composition from granite to hornblende diorite.
