En Route to World Environmental History his inclinations were ecumenical. Or so it seems from reading his letters; I never met him. My father, William H. McNeill, born in Vancouver in 1917, became one of the most visible world historians of his time. As he recounts it (McNeill, 2005), he found the history education offered by his teachers at the University of Chicago and Cornell constraining, and was dazzled by the global vision on display in the work of Arnold J. Toynbee’s A Study of History. He planned from an early age to write his own history of the world, hoping to improve upon Toynbee.

His course ultimately led to his magnum opus, The Unending Frontier (Richards, 2003), a global environmental history of the early modern centuries. Our conversation that evening revised my impression of him upward and perhaps eased his doubts about me. Richards’ work on deforestation had brought him into contact with natural scientists at Ecosystems Center, part of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. A group there, led by ecologists George Woodwell and Richard Houghton, were then engaged in primitive modeling of the Earth’s carbon cycle with a view to understanding the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In Wright’s book, the structure of large global changes is related to finely grained specifics rooted in local language, culture, experiences, and perceptions, an approach that could be more widely emulated (Gerritsen, 2012). Having finished my dissertation, joined the academic work force, and discovered the WHA and the Journal of World History, I then made up for lost time, catching up with the “classics” of world history, many of which are mentioned in multiple essays in this volume.
