It is easily found in a variety of habitats, especially around small farm dams and wooded areas near water. Behaviourally, these species differ further in that Plumed tends to forage on aquatic vegetation by grazing around the edges of wetlands, whereas Wandering generally spends more time in the water. Plumed is a widespread species found in a variety of wetland areas and swamps through the tropical north of Australia and down the e. side of the continent.
