Seles won the hard-fought contest, 6–3, 6–2. At the press conference after the match, however, she was somewhat surprised to find that the reporters were more interested in why she had thrown roses into the stands than in how she had managed to overcome Garrison. There were three more matches to go to reach the impossible dream of making the finals in her first Grand Slam event. She defeated both Jo-Anne Faull and then Manuela Maleeva, 6–3, 7–5, in the quarterfinals. She was on her way to the semifinals against the great champion, Steffi Graf, who was going for her sixth Grand Slam title.

Until 1997, the center court was called the Louis Armstrong Stadium, and it seated 19,500. Today’s center court is named after Arthur Ashe, the great African-American R I S I N G S TA R tennis player who died of AIDS in 1993. With a hard playing surface (asphalt composition), it seats 23,500 and is the largest tennis arena in the world. S. Open is America’s premier tennis championship. These are the places Monica Seles dreamed of as a young teenager. But in 1986 the pro circuit was still a dream away, and life settled down to a routine in her new country.

The first set was tough, but Seles managed to pull it out with a win, 6–4. However, the chilly weather and her own fatigue hindered her playing during the second set, and she lost the first three games. There was no hope of looking into the stands for encouragement that afternoon, however. Her father had apparently come down with the same virus she had, and he and her mother were resting back at the hotel. Zoltan had said he would come along during the match, but Monica hadn’t seen him yet in the stands.
