Under the Michigan undergraduate policy considered by the Supreme Court, for example, applicants were eligible for a 20-point bonus on a 150-point scale if they gave some indication of socioeconomic disadvantage, such as revealing on application essays that their parents worked a low-wage job, or that they were raised by a single parent, or that they worked excessive hours while in high school.
Charles found that whites, although more tolerant of residential segregation than they had been in Farley’s day, still preferred neighborhoods in which they were clearly in the majority, and they showed more tolerance for a substantial Hispanic or Asian presence in their neighborhood than large numbers of blacks.
