The first avenue opened up in a spatial examination of inequality is the ability to investigate the kind of within-system relationships of interest to comparativists and at the heart of configurations of inequality: How are different types of inequality related to one another? Because inequality is rising among both men and women, among families, and within racial groups, it might be assumed that all forms of inequality are higher wherever “overall” inequality is higher.

Each city was selected to represent one of the four configurations of inequality. Since much has been written on the major cities of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and the region of Silicon Valley, the fourth section compares the structures of inequality in these cities to one another and to the ideal types represented by the four main cities. Finally, I close with some brief theoretical and policy-related comments, which will be developed in greater detail in the next and concluding chapters.
