These two shows are condensed into a single event in the movie 24 Hour Party People, a fictionalized history of the Manchester scene as Wilson saw it from the ’70s through the ’90s. The historical sweep of 24 Hour Party People covers the progression from punk to postpunk and new wave, and nowhere is that evolution more pronounced than with those three lads from the Sex Pistols’ shows. Albrecht, Hook, and Curtis initially recorded as Warsaw, and their sound was unabashedly punk. Changing their name to Joy Division and adding the precise, almost machine-like, drumming of Stephen Morris, the group’s sound was altered dramatically.

In the lyrics, Springsteen’s knack for particular detail served him well.
