The problematic and contradictory relationship that was established between the Northeast and the South reflected the intersection of the geographic and temporal dimensions that created the modern nation of Brazil. The conceptual tension between the old (traditional) and modern (progressive) spheres of the nation was thus mapped onto the geography of the country as two complementary halves (Northeast and South). The Brazilian Northeast is typically defined as an area comprising eight or nine of Brazil’s twenty-six states and some 20 percent of the country’s population.

The music was simultaneously simple and complex; it demanded participation from all those who could feel it. This kind of interaction among participants in musical events has been widely noted for many styles of African music. Afro-Brazilian music carries on this tradition. To really “get it,” one must be deeply engaged in a kind of interplay of competency with the more skilled “performers,” who provide the security of a solid musical base. This inspires widespread participation and creates the environment for social bonding.

The most common terms used for identifying peoples of mixed racial heritage include mulatto (European and African), caboclo and mameluco (European and Amerindian), and cafuzo (Amerindian and African). These and dozens of other popular classifications (mestiço, moreno, chulo, pardo, and so on) describe hair types, skin pigmentations, and other physical attributes of multirace identity in Brazil. The complexity of racial identification is evident in this nuanced attention to skin color and other aspects of physical appearance.
