Microcontroller Requirements for Motor Control Application One way to reduce the overall cost of a smart motor controller system is to integrate as many of the essential elements into the controller chip as is economically feasible. The motor control system usually demands a dedicated microcontroller (MCU) that creates the brain of the drive.

The added circuitry will add about 20-30% to the cost of power supplies, but the near-term energy savings will greatly outweigh the initial cost. Moreover, a power factor correction (PFC) may be required to receive the CE mark for the equipment. The IEC 1000-3-2 standard, published in 1995, sets requirements for harmonic currents. The Importance of a Power Factor Correction As just stated, several reasons support implementing PFC in the design of electronic equipment. Switching power supplies, motor control frequency inverters, and lighting electronics pull current in narrow, high-amplitude pulses rather than sinusoidally from the AC lines, see Figure 3-1.

In volts per hertz control, the voltage applied command is calculated directly from the applied frequency to maintain a constant air-gap flux in the machine. In steady-state operation, the machine air-gap flux is approximately related to the ratio Vs/fs, where V s is the amplitude of motor phase voltage and fs is the synchronous electrical frequency applied to the motor. A typical volts per hertz control system is illustrated in Figure 2-4.
