Blakey kept the Jazz Messengers alive by adding new musicians whenever others left. His group soon became a revolving door of opportunity for many upand-coming players. For 30 years, Blakey’s Jazz Messengers was the training ground for an incredible number of musicians who went on to become famous SOLO players. Just a few of them included FREDDIE HUBBARD, WAYNE SHORTER, KEITH JARRETT, WYNTON and BRANFORD MARSALIS, CHICK COREA, STANLEY CLARKE, and JOANNE BRACKEEN. Blakey was devoted to bringing the driving energy of jazz back to the masses.

For the latter, she presented works for solo PIANO, jazz trio, and big band. Since marrying her second husband, Lew Tabackin (reeds and FLUTE), in 1969, she has concentrated on composing for large and small ensembles. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra features her husband, Lew Tabackin, as featured soloist and has gained worldwide acclaim since its formation in 1973. In 1999 she premiered a big band suite at the MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL marking the 100th anniversary of DUKE ELLINGTON’s birth. Akiyoshi has a reputation as a highly original composer on the scale of Ellington.

Akiyoshi, Toshiko (b. 1929) Japanese piano player, composer, and bandleader Akiyoshi is an innovative bandleader who successfully blends elements of traditional Japanese music with American-style jazz. Akiyoshi’s father was an actor in traditional Japanese Noh drama and encouraged his three daughters to learn PIANO and other arts. Her first exposure to jazz came after World War II through the music played by occupying American troops.
