With that caveat in mind, we can break Kirby’s career down roughly into six sometimes-overlapping periods, the better to show what he accomplished and under what circumstances: 22 Kirby’s Improbable Career Simon and Kirby then enjoyed a string of hits, most notably The Boy Commandos, for rival publisher DC, starting in 1942 as America lurched into WWII. By this point “Simon & Kirby” had become a studio—a place where other professionals could find work—and a recognized brand name. During wartime Simon and Kirby were both called into military service, and Kirby saw heavy combat in the European theater, eventually returning with a medical discharge in 1945.

Until the shocks of the Mainline period, S&K had been one of the most successful creative and business partnerships in comic books, establishing a name brand and packaging hit titles for many publishers. For this, they are now recognized as pillars of the comic book’s mythical Golden Age. Yet S&K were hardly immune to the vagaries of the business, as they were often reminded. What’s more, in testimony to the unpredictability of the industry, the quality of their studio’s output varied drastically.

Romance comics are the open secret in Kirby’s career: a genre obstinately neglected by today’s collectors and fans. This neglect, dictated by investment in superhero and adventure comics, gives a distorted sense of Kirby’s career. Make no mistake: to S&K, the romance genre was a godsend, and a major, in fact the major, source of their productivity and earnings from the late forties to the late fifties. Harry Mendryk’s blog series “Art of Romance” (from his Simon and Kirby blog, 2008–2010), which is the most complete study to date of S&K’s work in the genre, makes the point that romance was quite lucrative, that in fact it kept the studio going for years.
